I make custom curtains for restaurants, cafés, offices, clinics, inns and community halls across the Eastern Townships. The craft is the same as residential work. What changes is the use: a commercial curtain is handled every day, washed more often and checked during inspections.

Fire safety surprises people most. In a space open to the public, hanging textiles are regulated, and an ordinary curtain, however beautiful, can make you fail an inspection. There are two routes: an inherently flame-resistant fabric, where the property is in the fibre, or a fabric treated after the fact, which has to be re-treated periodically. The first costs more up front and loses nothing in the wash. Bring me your specifications and I will propose a treated or certified fabric that meets your project's requirements.

A commercial curtain also gets dirty faster. Near a door it collects street dust; near a kitchen, grease. I plan headings that come down without tools and are reinforced where staff and customers touch the fabric, with a lining that shrinks at the same rate as the face fabric.

Then come sound and light. For a dining room that echoes or a meeting room, I work with heavy velvet and acoustic wool in generous pleats, which increase the absorbing surface. I prefer to see your space at least once during opening hours. An empty room at 9 a.m. shows nothing. The same room at 5 p.m., full, with the sun on the west-side tables, shows the problem in three minutes. I also see how staff move and which windows really matter. Often two windows out of eight cause the whole problem.
